3LPE coating (Three-Layer Polyethylene, also known as 3PE coating) is a high-performance multi-layer anti-corrosion system widely used on the outer wall of steel pipes. It provides long-term reliable protection for buried or underwater pipelines through the synergistic effect of the three layers of materials.

1. What is 3LPE coating?

3LPE coating is composed of three layers:

  • The bottom layer (fused epoxy powder, FBE): approximately 80-120 micrometers thick, directly bonded to the surface of the steel pipe, providing extremely strong adhesion and a basic anti-corrosion barrier.

  • The middle layer (copolymer adhesive): approximately 170-250 micrometers thick, playing the role of "connecting the upper and lower layers", ensuring the firm bonding of the epoxy in the bottom layer and the polyethylene in the outer layer.

  • The outer layer (high-density polyethylene, HDPE): approximately 2.5-3.7 millimeters thick, serving as the outermost "shield", mainly responsible for mechanical protection, abrasion resistance, and weather resistance.

These three layers are formed in one go through winding or circular mold coating processes in the factory, forming a firm whole with the steel pipe.

2. What is the use of 3LPE coating?

Its core value lies in providing comprehensive and long-lasting protection for steel pipes:

  • Excellent anti-corrosion performance: The three-layer structure forms a dense barrier, effectively isolating water, oxygen, soil electrolytes, etc., from corroding the steel pipe and preventing rust and chemical erosion.

  • Outstanding mechanical protection: The tough polyethylene outer layer can resist soil compression, friction, impact, and physical damage during the construction process.

  • Resistance to cathodic stripping: This characteristic reduces the excessive reliance of the pipeline on auxiliary cathodic protection systems, thereby reducing the maintenance costs throughout the life cycle.

  • Extended service life: The comprehensive protective effect can significantly increase the service life of buried steel pipes from several years to 30-50 years, making it the preferred anti-corrosion solution for long-distance pipelines.

3. Where is 3LPE coating applied?

Due to its high performance, 3LPE coating is mainly used in fields with extremely high requirements for anti-corrosion and durability:

  • Energy transmission pipelines: Long-distance pipelines for transporting oil and natural gas, which is its most classic and widespread application scenario.

  • Underwater pipelines: Suitable for marine environments, able to resist seawater corrosion and marine organisms' adhesion.

  • Urban infrastructure: Water supply, drainage, heating, etc. pipeline systems in municipal engineering.

  • Industrial fields: Chemical, power, etc. industry fluid transmission pipelines.

  • Special environments: Desert, permafrost, salt-alkali land, etc., in extreme climate and corrosive soil environments.

In summary, 3LPE coating through the "epoxy anti-corrosion + adhesive transition + polyethylene armor" triple design solves the corrosion problem of steel pipes in harsh environments for long-term service, and has become one of the standard anti-corrosion technologies for high-pressure, long-distance, and important infrastructure pipelines worldwide.
