Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of ASTM A53 pipes plays a crucial role in determining their properties and performance. The key elements and their influences are as follows:
| Chemical Requirements | |||||||||
| Composition,max,% | |||||||||
| Carbon | Manganese | Phosphorus | Sulfur | CopperA | NickelA | ChromiumA | MolybdenumA | VanadiumA | |
| Type S (seamless pipe) | |||||||||
| Grade A | 0.25B | 0.95 | 0.05 | 0.045 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.15 | 0.08 |
| Grade B | 0.3C | 1.2 | 0.05 | 0.045 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.15 | 0.08 |
| Type E (electric-resistance-welded) | |||||||||
| Grade A | 0.25B | 0.95 | 0.05 | 0.045 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.15 | 0.08 |
| Grade B | 0.3C | 1.2 | 0.05 | 0.045 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.15 | 0.08 |
| Type F (furmace-welded pipe) | |||||||||
| Grade A | 0.3B | 1.2 | 0.05 | 0.045 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.15 | 0.08 |
| A The total composition for these five elements shall not exceed 1.00%. | |||||||||
| B For each reduction of 0.01% below the specified carbon maximum,an increase of 0.06% manganese above the specified maximum will be pemitted up to a maximum of 1.35%. | |||||||||
| C For each reduction of 0.01% below the specified carbon maximum,an increase of 0.06% manganese above the specied maximum wil be pemitted up to amaximum of 1.65%. | |||||||||
The chemical composition directly affects the strength, hardness, workability, and weldability of the pipes.
Physical Properties
| Tensile Requirements | ||
| Grade A | Grade B | |
| Tensile strength,min,psi [MPa] | 48000 [330] | 60000 [415] |
| Yield strength,min,psi [MPa] | 30000 [205] | 35000 [240] |
| Elongation in 2 in.or 50 mm | A,B | A,B |
| AThe minimum elongation in 2 in.[50 mm]shall be that determined by the following equation: | ||
| e=625000[1940]A0.2/U0.9 | ||
| where: | ||
| e=minimum elongation in 2 in.or 50 mm in percent,rounded to the nearest percent, | ||
| A=the lesser of 0.75 in.2 [500 mm²]and the cross-sectional area of the tension test specimen,calculated using the specified outside diameter of the pipe,or the nominal width of the tension test specimen and the specified wall thickness of the pipe,with the calculated value rounded to the nearest 0.01 in.²[1 mm²],and | ||
| U=specified minimum tensile strength,psi [MPa]. | ||
| B See Table X4.1 or Table X4.2(ASTM A53 2020),whichever is applicable,for the minimum elongation values that are required for various combinations of tension test specimen size and specified minimum tensile strength. | ||
Permissible Variations in Weight (Mass)and Dimensions
- Weight (Mass):The weight (mass) of the pipe shall not vary more than±10%from its specified weight(mass),as derived by multiplying its measured length by its specified weight(mass)per unit length.
- Diameter: For pipe NPS 1%[DN 40]or smaller,the outside diameter at any point shall not vary more than±/64in. [0.4 mm]from the specified outside diameter.For pipe NPS 2[DN 50]or larger,the outside diameter shall not vary more than±1%from the specified outside diameter.
- Thickness: The minimum wall thickness at any point shall be not more than 12.5%under the specified wall thickness.The minimum wall thickness on inspection shall conform to the requirements given in TableX2.4(ASTM A53 2020).

Applications
- Plumbing: For water and gas distribution.
- Construction: As structural supports, scaffolding, and fencing.
- Oil and Gas: Transporting oil, gas, and other fluids.
- HVAC Systems: For air ducts and ventilation
Advantages
