Blackening the steel pipes (commonly referred to as black paint / black varnish / asphalt black paint in the industry) is essentially a protective coating, not an aesthetic one. Considering the scenario of exporting steel pipes (to markets such as Saudi Arabia, Chile, Poland, etc., for maritime transportation), its significance mainly lies in the following aspects:
1. Core Function: Short-term rust and corrosion prevention
After the steel pipes are rolled, their surfaces are exposed iron. When exposed to air, moisture, and salt fog, they will rust. After the black paint dries, it forms a dense physical barrier that separates the steel surface from water, oxygen, and salt:
- During maritime transportation: The ship holds high temperatures and humidity, sometimes with condensation. Bare pipes travel on a 30–45-day voyage to the Middle East/South America, and the surface is prone to "red rust". Painting the pipes with black paint can withstand this period and prevent them from rusting so severely upon arrival.
- During storage period: In short-term outdoor or semi-outdoor storage at export factories or storage yards, the black paint can delay the formation of rust. Generally, it can prevent corrosion for 3–6 months (depending on the thickness of the paint and the environment).
> Note: Black paint is a medium-light temporary anti-corrosion measure, not the heavy anti-corrosion used for underground pipelines. Underground water and oil pipelines need professional coatings such as 3PE, epoxy coal tar pitch, and FBE; black paint cannot withstand this.
2. Delivery Condition and Customer Requirements
Many RFQs from customers in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia directly state "black painted" or "as black varnish". This is itself a standard delivery condition:
- Customers either apply their own topcoat directly or further process the pipes. The black paint acts as the "base coat" for delivery;
- The black paint can cover surface color differences, minor scratches, and rolling patterns, making the entire batch of pipes appear color-coordinated and improving the acceptance experience.
3. Summary in One Sentence
Painting the steel pipes black = providing them with an "anti-rust outer garment for maritime transportation and storage periods", mainly addressing the problem of rust during long-distance export and storage in storage yards, while also meeting some customers' requirements for "black painted" delivery. It is not the final anti-corrosion solution; for long-term use, it needs to be replaced by subsequent coatings or galvanization (galvanized).
