ASTM A519 is a standard formulated by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), which is applicable to seamless steel tubes of carbon steel and alloy steel for mechanical engineering. This type of steel pipe is typically used in components that require high-precision dimensions and mechanical properties, such as hydraulic systems, automotive drive shafts, gearboxes, bearing sleeves, etc., rather than for high-pressure or high-temperature services (such applications are usually covered by ASTM A106 or A335).

Steel grades and differences under the A519 standard
This standard covers multiple steel grades, mainly divided into two categories: carbon steel and alloy steel. The chemical composition, mechanical properties and applicable scenarios of different steel grades vary significantly.

GRADE 1020

Composition: Low-carbon steel (C≤0.20%), containing manganese (0.30-0.60%).

Performance: Relatively low strength (tensile strength ≥380 MPa, yield strength ≥205 MPa), but excellent ductility and weldability.

Application: Light-load mechanical components, such as brackets, casings, etc.

GRADE 1025

Composition: The carbon content is slightly higher (C: 0.22-0.28%), and the manganese content is similar to that of 1020.

Performance: Strength slightly higher than 1020 (tensile strength ≥415 MPa, yield strength ≥240 MPa).

Application: Medium-load structural components, such as shaft parts.

GRADE 4130

Composition: Contains chromium (0.80-1.10%) and molybdenum (0.15-0.25%), and carbon content 0.28-0.33%.

Performance: High strength (tensile strength ≥560 MPa, yield strength ≥290 MPa), and performance can be significantly improved after heat treatment (quenching + tempering).

Application: High-stress components such as aviation and racing car drive shafts.

GRADE 4140

Composition: Higher carbon content (0.38-0.43%), chromium (0.80-1.10%), molybdenum (0.15-0.25%).

Performance: Tensile strength ≥655 MPa, yield strength ≥415 MPa, high hardness but poor weldability.

Application: Heavy-duty gears, oil drilling tools, etc.

GRADE 8620

Composition: Contains nickel (0.40-0.70%), chromium (0.40-0.60%), molybdenum (0.15-0.25%), and low carbon (0.18-0.23%).

Performance: High toughness, suitable for surface carburizing treatment, and excellent impact resistance.

Application: Gears, camshafts and other components that require surface hardening.

A53/A106: Used in piping systems (such as water and gas), it places more emphasis on pressure resistance rather than mechanical strength.

A335: Suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure environments (such as power station boilers), it is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel.

A519: Specifically designed for mechanical components, it emphasizes dimensional accuracy and tensile/yield strength.

Load requirements: For high-stress environments, select 4140 or 4130.

Processability: 1020/1025 is easy to weld and cold work.

Heat treatment: When heat treatment is needed to enhance performance, alloy steel should be selected.

Cost: The cost of carbon steel (such as 1020) is lower than that of alloy steel.
