JIS 3101 is a standard for general structural rolled steel in the Japanese Industrial Standards, stipulating technical requirements such as the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the materials.

SS400 is a Steel grade under this standard, where "SS" stands for "Steel Structure" (structural steel), and the number "400" indicates that its minimum tensile strength is 400 MPa.

The chemical composition requirements for SS400 are relatively lenient and it is suitable for common structural applications.

• Carbon (C) : ≤0.30%

• Manganese (Mn) : ≤1.60%

• Phosphorus (P) : ≤0.050%

• Sulfur (S) : ≤0.050%

• Silicon (Si) : Not strictly limited, usually ≤0.35%
